Resolved my problem through (re)installation of 9.10 (instead of
upgrade), now it works like a charm.

I guess that for me it's related to the video controller (Brookdale): -
when putting resolution as low as 640 x 480, mouse appears again. Of
course this is not a workable video resolution.

Did an upgrade from Jaunty to Karmic Koala - PS2 mouse worked fine in
Jaunty, just disappeared in 9.10. However, for a newly created user, no
problem, user has mouse in desktop session. But for any previously
created users on the system, there is just no mouse.When starting
