I fixed it with changing my bios settings (see attachment) and then
calling
sudo su
update-grub
apt-get install fglrx-updates
aticonfig --initial
update-grub

I have the same problem. Thinkpad t 500, fresh ubuntu 12.04 install.
After 'aptitude install fglrx-updates fglrx-amdcccle-updates' the laptop
does not shutdown. It shows ubuntu with five white dots and just hangs
forever.

Upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04. first went fine. After reboot machine did not boot
