I'm also affected using GeForce 9500GT (2x DVI) with 1680x1050 screens.
To start LiveCD I have to switch to 1280x1024 screen.

the whole ppa in contrast to Tormod Volden's ppa.
Sometimes a package could be defective. It's bleeding edge.

Hi ken, /etc/X11/xorg.conf isn't a zero byte file. If you want to still
use the radeon (not radeonhd) driver there is nothing to change.

Besides the PPA from Tormod Volden you can try the PPA from Xorg-Edgers:
https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa
But be aware: Both PPAs are (daily) snapshots and can kill you XServer.
If a Snapshot is working fine, leave it as it is. Do not update.
My suggestion is to wait until Tormod
You only need to change the xorg.conf.
