After further investigation, it looks like this was just an interaction
of the disable touchpad when typing option. If that is disabled, then
this works as expected.

Correct. The problem doesn't occur with libxcb1 1.1-1ubuntu1. I did
notice that this is exposed by the fact that we divert /usr/bin/firefox
to /usr/bin/firefox.distrib. The problem doesn't occur if
/usr/bin/firefox-3.0 is called directly. I also discovered a similar
error starting gnome-screens
That was with the package in hardy proposed. Firefox failing to start
was not a symptom of the original bug.
