FWIW my notebook has both a trackpad and a pointing stick, both with
their own buttons. The trackpad and buttons stops working, but the
pointing stick and its buttons continue to work.

I have a Dell Latitude E6510 with a Core i7 processor and intel
integrated video, and with Maverick's 2.6.35 I get neither the splash
nor the video. Only by disabling the splash and upgrading to 2.6.36
(from kernel.ubuntu.com)
