After remembering the history around this bug, this looks much more like
a kernel bug than an xorg bug, as I've remarked the first black screen
after upgrading to kernel 3.8.0-17.

Public bug reported:
DO : start Kubuntu with latest xserver-xorg package updates.
DO : switch to VT using Ctrl+Alt+Fx
EXPECT : the screen actually switches to VT
ACTUAL : black screen with no signal sent to it (it becomes actually in
sleeping mode). However it is possible to switch back to X.
auxbuss You should use package nvidia-current, not NVidia-173. I'm not
even sure your card is supported by driver nvidia-173...

This fixes the boot problem. Now I really think that the nvidia-glx
packages should be made incompatible as this was the case previously,
and the one used for the graphic card sets up its own
/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf instead of using update-alternatives. This
would demand a bit more bandwidth
There's already a bug upon that. Search in launchpad console is broken
with vga=791 or stg like that.

I've remarked that the fix randomly screws up my boot process, i.e. quite often
the system hangs while booting, and I have to perform SAK system call during
boot to get prompted into a root shell and type mountall.
Then everything runs fine, but I have a background root shell, which is not
Same issue there.

Given that the only persons affected are using NVidia graphic cards,
NVidia driver is most likely to be the culprit.
