Well, I apologise, I was wrong. I managed to fix my problem.
When running unity_support_test -p I was receiving "Error: no composite
extension".
I ran:
sudo nvidia-xconfig --composite
Rebooted
and now I am running Unity 3D.
Hopefully this helps someone else.

I too am still experiencing the same problems caused by a regression on
upgrade to Precise. If I force 3D unity to be loaded on startup all I
get is my wallpaper after login. I can't see how this could possibly be
a different issue.

FWIW, I should add to my note at #157 that I am running 32-bit Ubuntu.

295.49 does not fix the problem for me. Login is still loading Unity 2D
by default.
