This problem has disappeared, apparently on its own, by which I mean
as a result of one or more of the updates I have installed in the
meantime.

Every reboot exhibits the same behavior: name and PW are accepted, but
the session terminates during the welcome sound, and goes back to the
login window. A second attempt almost always succeeds, and logins are
normal until the next reboot.
