The issue has disappeared after I installed Bumblebee from the PPA, and
the NVIDIA driver. Issue can be closed.

Actually the problem disappeared after I installed drivers from the
Bumblebee PPA (https://launchpad.net/~bumblebee/+archive/stable).
Switching to NVIDIA finally allowed me to use switchable graphics, see
http://askubuntu.com/a/303897/30266.

DVI interface of the docking station. Starting X fails with a
