Tried both options, neither allow me to get to the log in screen. Just
a flashing underscore in top left of the screen. The ubuntu splash
screen is seen after post but drops out to scrolling text there are some
dependency warnings in a orangey brown colour.

When running the command xrandr --output default --rotate
where signifies "left",
"right" and "inverted" respectfully; the terminal returns:
xrandr --output default --rotate left
xrandr: output default cannot use rotation "left" reflection "none"
