I don't think the display is a non-essential hardware component.
In fact, it is THE most important hardware a laptop/netbook can offer. Or do
you think your computer is usable without a display?
This is a regression to previous Ubuntu releases.

your PPAs resolved the problems for me.
Unity feels fast like hell.
p.s. I had to "unity --reset" and reboot afterwards.

I found that the crashed seems to be realated to an improper BIOS/CPU
setting.
