This bug can be worked around by doing the following:
1. mkdir /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d
2. cp /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/
3. Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf to look like the file reproduced
below. This sets up the bottom 25% of the touchpad as

The Acer ES1-311-C9XM is equipped with a Synaptics 'ClickPad', i.e. a
touchpad with integrated 'click' button.
The default settings assume that the ClickPad is just a normal touchpad
with a single hardware mouse button. Basic touchpad functionality is OK.
