I was having the same problem with a Lenovo G560 and natty. Patrickus's solution (#12) seems to have worked for me. The screen would go to sleep, and then X would be unresponsive - except the mouse would move. I could Ctrl-Alt-F1 into a terminal. All programs were operative, just inaccessible. -
