Had the same problem with a toshiba satellite pro 4600 and lucid. I only had to
generate a fresh xorg.conf with :
sudo X -configure
sudo mv ~/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Edit this file to modify the monitor section :
Section Monitor
Identifier Configured Monitor
Option DPMS true
HorizSync

I have a thinkpad R50e, which has a intel 82852/855GM.
I like my brightness level to be at the maximum value (7).
In /sys/devices/virtual/backlight/thinkpad_screen, I have :
actual_brightness : 7
brightness : 7
When I switch from a graphical console

Forget to mention that I had to enable KMS due to a GPU freeze after
upgrading to karmic, using options i915 modeset=1.
I have another issue : my cursor is disappearing after closing re-
opening the lid. Have to change the VT come back to get the cursor
back.
Seems this three issues are
