I suspect this problem to be connected with the overall performance of the computer. There is most probably a race condition between gnome settings and gnome, because as far as all posts go it can be easily fixed by waiting for two seconds before trying to load gnome settings. I have many computers with 10.10 running and only the best one (i7 820, SSD) is having this problem, but not always, it is about 50/50.
