Black internal screen on my G1 820 too. May be its a problem with
function "lower screen intensity when inactive" (energy), i have
disabled it now.

On Ubuntu Studio 13.04 64 bit i pulled in some updates yesterday, after
the reboot i noticed that the fan of my graphics card (nVidia GeForce
9300M G) started to spin faster than normal. So i opened nvidia-settings
and checked the temperature, it showed me it was 74 °C degrees

I do not know if it will help either, but replacing "sna" with "uxa" in
/etc/X11/xorg.conf ( or creating a new file with these contents:
Section "Device"
Identifier "intel"
Driver "intel"
Option "AccelMethod" "uxa"
EndSection
) will at least make gnome-shell / unity / ...
5 years I started using Ubuntu again alongside Windows recently and
am now discovering that this annoying behavior still exists which should
have been fixed a long time ago. Please, fix it or tell us how to fix it
ourselves.

Maverick alpha 2 installs and boots correctly into X, initializing the
correct screen. Outside of X and during boot the screen is still
mangled, but this would be a different issue, I'd guess.
