Seems the 3d screensaver was to blame. After configuring the system to
not launch any screensaver but just put the monitor to sleep the system
didn't show the problem anymore.
My guess is there is a bug in the video driver that shows when the 3d
section of the video card is used.

After substituting the system-provided Firefox (3.6.x, IIRC) with
Firefox 7 downloaded from mozilla site, the system didn't experience the
problem anymore. I'll keep an eye on it in the next few days, though.

Hi, I suffer from this bug, too, but my system hangs usually after 3-5 days of
uptime. A few times it hung after only a few hours.
Only one time did I see a freeze while I was working. It usually freezes while
I'm not at the desktop, thus the screen is in dpms save mode.

I can run the laptop with full desktop effects with no problem at all
for days when only the laptop lcd is used and no external monitor is
connected.
Also, sometimes I can enable the external monitor at 1920x1080 both with

I have a similar problem. I'm running a fully updated (up to 17-apr-2010)
9.10 on a Toshiba A100 with a intel 945 chipset. When desktop effects are
