I'm also having this. It started on 14.04 but has got significantly
worse on the upgrade to 14.10 - it is intermittent. It would happen only
occasionally on 14.04 but now happens almost all the time on 14.10. I
have nVidia graphics but am using nouveau. What's particularly bad about

I'll just confirm this bug to stop it being closed. I also had to
install libvdpau1 manually after a clean Lucid install. I used Hardware
Drivers to install the NVIDIA driver.

Same problem here, clean install of Kubuntu Lucid Alpha 2. Nvidia
proprietary driver does not install.
I'll attach /var/log/jockey.log for the nvidia driver (I have tried
twice).
Since modern nvidia hardware will overheat rapidly if used with the nv
driver, I would regard this bug as serious.
Should have said, this is on i386, not x86_64 as per the OP.
