That's a real shame; given recent announcements regarding Ubuntu on
tablet/phone/TV, this device would make a perfect showcase of what is _already_
possible on the tablet form factor today.

I followed the steps in #4 and can confirm the exact same behaviour in
Oneiric, the screen blacks out when 1024x576 resolution is set using
xrandr.

1024x768 is a 4:3 resolution which does appear in the Displays dialogue
and works "as expected", i.e. there are large vertical black stripes on
both sides of the screen (since the screen itself is 16:9).
I presume you actually meant to ask does the screen black when 1024x576
