Here is a gdb log showing /usr/lib/xscreensaver/solarwinds being
executing succesfully a couple of times in karmic-as-of-aug-23rd and
then on the 4th time the program is started, it hits a SIGFPE almost
right away. The log includes bt full and info registers.

Yes I just repro'd it on karmic. I just had to open the screensaver
dialog and then I selected solarwinds and press Preview. I let the
apport crash submit from karmic and I marked that bug (417855) as a
duplicate of this one in case the fresh logs contains additional clues.
As of right now,
I have no really good solution for this but let me at least give you
some more information, maybe you can use that to debug the issue
further.
I think, when compiz is running all windows are rendered as 3D textures.
In additional, I think compiz also flips itself into INDIRECT rendering
mode
A long long time ago, there used to be an old driver for VIA cards in
the package xserver-xorg-video-via but that driver was really bad so the
OpenChrome project was started to replace it sort of. There is no driver
at all in the xserver-xorg-video-via package... that package is just
used to make
@jlpino. Yes, the bug has been fixed upstream which means that in the
next version of the driver this bug won't be there (for example, it will
be fixed in karmic). If you want a decent workaround quickly I suggest
you set EXANoUploadToScreen to true in the device section of your
xorg.conf.

@Akkana Peck, can you please install these packages:
xserver-xorg-video-ati-dbg xserver-xorg-core-dbg libgl1-mesa-dri-dbg
libgl1-mesa-dri-glx
...and then sample 2-3 stacks from xorg while it's spinning the CPU and attach
that to this bug.
Can you also try separately if:
