Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg
This bug should affect all versions of Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10, but has been tested and confirmed with Ubuntu 10.04, UbuntuStudio 10.04, and UbuntuStudio 10.10 Beta. I expect to see a loading screen followed by a login screen after I select Ubuntu on the GRUB menu. Instead, I get a couple of text lines about either init or the kernel before the screen goes completely black. On a fresh install to a Vaio vpccw21fx, the computer screen goes completely blank. This happens before even the graphical loading screen, but just after a couple of lines of text appear just after GRUB hands control over to the boot process. From my research, the problem seems to be an issue with the newer nVidia cards on the latest line of Vaio systems. More specifically, there seems to be an issue with the EDID file being used. This issue affects my wife's vpccw21fx. My own vpcf115fm, which runs a different distribution, encountered a similar problem. The models are different enough such that the solution to one doesn't exactly port to the other, but the workaround for my system was to include the line Option "CustomEDID" "DFP-0: /proc/acpi/video/NGFX/LCD/EDID" into the Device section of my xorg.conf file. From what I've read, with the vpccw21fx, however, simply pointing it at proc won't work. An EDID file needs to be provided from elsewhere. Again, this is only a workaround to whatever the base problem is. Also, my own system worked fine with vesa, but encountered errors with nouveau and nvidia before the work-around. As Ubuntu is defaulting to nouveau for my wife's system, however, the system is a screenless black box upon loading Ubuntu. ** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Blank screen on fresh install for Vaio model vpccw21fx https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/630674 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in ubuntu. _______________________________________________ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
