Since reporting this problem I looked more closely at syslog. It looks like the ASIC hang was caused by my attemts to restart the system. In particular, it happens after "SysRq : SAK". The real problem is a few lines earlier: [fglrx:firegl_lock_free] *ERROR* lock was not held by 12! (*lock=0x8
