Follow up to comment 25. Sometimes the hang happens even while browsing within a Firefox window. I saw the following in dmesg around the time of the problems. I tried Ctl-Alt-F1/Ctl-Alt-F7 and the graphics screen hung (black screen with moveable mouse cursor). I do recall seeing the login
