I experienced this bug too in Ubuntu 10.10 but it disappeared when I
upgraded to 11.04.
So it seems to affect Ubuntu 10.10 only and is fixed in Ubuntu 11.04.

It happens on a Compaq Deskpro ENL/P866 here. It's a Pentium III 866Mhz
with an Intel 815 chipset and an Nvidia graphic card.
The system freezes randomly and Ctrl-Alt-SysRq-B is the only way to
reboot.
