This appears to have been silently fixed as from the 16.04 HWE linux
kernel.
I have tested this on:
• 16.04 64-bit, kernel 4.8.0-45 installed with linux-generic-hwe-16.04
• 16.10 using a Live CD
• Today's 17.04 daily build using a Live CD
I suppose that this can be marked as solved. Pity it

@elmarikon Thank you, but alas, that doesn't work for me.

Christopher, thank you for the suggestion.
I have tested today's 14.10 both on a virtual machine and using a Live

Sadly, neither one worked.

I'm worried that this bug report will be closed due to lack of activity.
There is already a simple solution for this. What needs doing to
implement it? (I'm not a programmer, otherwise I'd do it myself!)

I confirm that it doesn't work in 14.04.
Here's the irony. If I load Windows in a virtual machine (Virtual Box),
the touch screen works within the virtual Windows machine.

Christopher, I no longer have 10.04, so unfortunately I cannot answer
your question.
I am on 12.04, and I have not experienced this problem with it.

I have tested the latest 14.04 as you requested, using both a Live USB

I have just found this bug, and I disagree completely. Ctrl+Alt+T, for

Yes, I did try the fourth option, which — if I recall correctly —
resulted in the same as option 1.
However, you are missing the point. Apport is supposed to report the
error, not refuse to do so.
Why does apport treat this Compiz crash entirely differently from any
other application crash?
--
Bryce Harrington: Problems with other packages allow you to file an
error. In this case, however, it simply points to generic help
facilities. I need to report an error with Compiz — I cannot do this if
apport does not work properly.

Joseph: I have downloaded and installed your 3.4.0 .deb as instructed.
However, it is not shown on the Grub screen (I have used sudo update-
grub).
I notice that your .deb installed a new linux-headers package, but not a
linux-image; is that why? Or have I done something wrong?

gdm does not take input on login
I ran an update today, and the update caused my machine to freeze at
some point before completing. Upon rebooting my machine, I find that I
no longer have any input (mouse or keyboard) to the login screen. This
sounds like it is the same this as the present bug. Any ideas how I can
log in again?
I believe I am affected by this. When I shut the lid of my laptop it
does NOT sleep (despite being set to sleep upon lid close) as the power
LED remains active. When I open the laptop, after a brief delay I am
presented with the main GDM login screen. After logging in, I get the
crash report.
