This is true. I see now that it also blinks just before the screen
saver activates.
My previous installations have never had this problem. Would changing
the xorg server affect/fix this? I have never done this, but I will
give it a shot. I'm afraid of rendering X inoperable.

I have switched to the new kernel. It does not seem to have solved the
problem. I double checked with System Monitor under the System tab.
It now says Kernel Linux 2.6.32-20-generic.
