I tried this again just now using Thunderbird; sure enough, as soon as I started to type an email address, I lost my touchpad. So, it seems that every time I input text from the keyboard into any available application's text field, the touchpad becomes unavailable until I log out and back in again

Still have this issue as well. As a side note, simply hovering over the launcher when coming out of suspend or hibernation when a window is maximized doesn't always clear the corruption. I then have to first minimize the window and then touch the launcher with the mouse cursor and it clears up. -

This is indeed very serious and should be fixed asap. Imagine you are working on an document, leave the application open and suspend your machine. Then you come back and the desktop is no longer accessible because you simply cannot see where to click. How can you try and save that doc to, lets say,
