This fixed for me:
Please also test this PPA which has a fix to the X driver I think might
help. Dunno if there's time to get it into natty, but maybe if enough
people test it soon and find it helps:

I have reverted back to using two-finger emulation, because I just can't
get used to two-finger scrolling with the fingers apart, that is really
unconvenient (same thing as with Windows and official Synaptics driver).
synclient -m 100 reads as follows :
two fingers apart : 2 fingers registered,
@Brice : indeed, bug #308191 contains an attached dkms synaptics package
which enables multitouch on some synaptics devices.
I think it is a much better solution, so you could call this bug #476866
a duplicate, I guess ?
Thanks for pointing to the other bug !

You received this bug
@Henrik : works on my Dell Studio 1747, thanks !
However ,the two fingers need to be somewhat apart for it to work, while
they could be joined when using two-finger emulation. I could get used
to it but it feels quite annoying. Anyone else noticed this ?

You received this bug notification
@fiacobelli : well, you are telling us your touchpad is made by ALPS,

I agree with Carlivar.
The problem is the lack of support for the native multitouch-enabled
synaptics touchpads.
Emulation is merely a workaround and not a satisfactory solution at all.
It may have to do with the synaptics driver I guess.

two-finger scrolling does not work on Dell Studio
As Philip reported, the fix is not satisfactory at all, as it only
emulates 2 fingers recognition whereas the touchpad is actually capable
of multitouch recognition, but behaves as if it was not.
I hope a driver revision or something solves the issue !
By the way, I am experiencing this on a
Oops, the touchpad clicked post comment while I was adding that I
actually used the workaround found here : http://forum.ubuntu-

It consists in editing the /etc/profile file and adding the following
lines :
Code:
xinput set-int-prop SynPS/2 Synaptics
