I am running natty with the same issue on a Lenovo Edge with built-in
Intel Graphics.

I see that this bug is set to be in xserver-xorg-input-synaptics while
the touchpad is an *alps* touchpad. Is this intended?

Touchpad is _unusable_ and renders mouse unusable as well unless
disabled by running
# modprobe -r psaux

Okay, found a mouse and the behaviour is the same
More information on that one:
It is only button1 that is affected and it is the same with the touchpad
or a mouse.
A usb mouse plugged in will work at first, but then lose the use of the
left (Button1) mouse button, as verified using
xev | grep
bump.
Keyboard shortcuts only get this system's user so far and I'm on an island
where I can't just go and buy a mouse.
What can I do to help fixing this?

# modprobe -r psmouse modprobe psmouse proto=imps
for some time, functionality is restored, but will deteriorate within
minutes.
repeated reloading of the module seems to consistently restore
functionality when taps

Binary package hint: xorg
clicking via tap or hardware-button only works occasionally, often the
mouse will hang in a pressed-state.
Loading module synaptics_i2c got rid of this behaviour temporarily, but
now the issue is back, even though synaptics_i2c is still loaded.
