Depending on how it crashes, ctrl-alt-F1 may or may not work. Obviously,
when it works, a clean reboot is possible. When it doesn't work, the
machine is entirely hung and only a hard power reset will recover it.

This bug has affected me since upgrading to Trusty. My machine has been
far less stable since the upgrade. Graphics/display crashes seem to be
behind the problem.
$ lspci | grep 'VGA\|Display'
01:00.0 VGA c
To be more specific, the display appears totally frozen and the mouse
and keyboard are unusable. I have to press the hard-reset button.

I can't find a workaround. The PC locks up. A reboot is necessary.
