I have the same issue in 12.04 too.
apport-collect -p xorg-server 701772
is not giving me any output.
As of now my original workaround work like magic
xrandr --newmode 1600x900_60.00 118.25 1600 1696 1856 2112 900 903 908 934
-hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode VGA1 1600x900_60.00
xrandr
I don't have latest distro to test this now, I can reopen the bug if I
observe the issue when I reinstall the OS in sometime.

After installing Ubuntu 10.04 with my Samsung SyncMaster B2030, native
resolution (1600X900) is not found in the list of resolutions, even
'detect monitors' option failed to detect my monitor.
I was able add the native resolution using xrandr.
