I have the same issue in 12.04 too. apport-collect -p xorg-server 701772 is not giving me any output. As of now my original workaround work like magic xrandr --newmode 1600x900_60.00 118.25 1600 1696 1856 2112 900 903 908 934 -hsync +vsync xrandr --addmode VGA1 1600x900_60.00 xrandr

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg After installing Ubuntu 10.04 with my Samsung SyncMaster B2030, native resolution (1600X900) is not found in the list of resolutions, even 'detect monitors' option failed to detect my monitor. I was able add the native resolution using xrandr. Ref
