Occasionally, after rebooting the system at the command-line, it begins
to start up normally and then the screen goes black. The system is not
responsive to network requests (openssh-server is installed and does not
work). Magic sysrq commands work.

I'm attaching the file created by "sudo dmesg > dmesg", and the files
/var/log/messages and /var/log/kern.log from a boot that got to the text
login prompt, but didn't start xorg.
I don't have an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.

I restarted it a few more times (without radeon.modeset=0) to see if any
other bizzare things would happen. Twice, I got to the screen with an
underscore in the corner, but it had a (moveable) mouse cursor in the
middle. Doing Ctrl-Alt-F1 got me to a text terminal. Switching back to
Xorg with Ctrl-

I'm not particularly skilled at Xorg, so the comment you linked doesn't
make much sense to me. Is this going to be remedied before release? Is
there a testing PPA I could add and test against?
