I'm seeing this issue, but not everywhere.
I have a Dell Latitude D800 with a nVidia GeForce FX Go5650 that works properly.
I have a Dell Precision M65 with a nVidia Quadro FX 350M that does not work.
All I get is a flashing cursor.

$HOME/.xmodmaprc. I have been crash free since removing this file...

I've been working with some folks via the Xorg mailing list. Through
that I have recompiled the latest evdev_drv.so module. I still had Xorg
exit on me, but this time I received a different backtrace. I've
attached the output.

These stack traces (of which I have another) all appear to be similar.
I would think this would make it easy to diagnose and to determine what
may be causing X to terminate. Can someone please look at this?

Yet another trace after a crash.
This time the OS is x86_64 as I reloaded from scratch to rule out a
problem during the 'do-release-upgrade' process.

This same thing has happened to me more than once. I was just trying to
open OpenOffice and my X session stopped. I was left with a login
screen. As you can imagine, this is very annoying.
When I logged back in, I was left with the following in /var/log/syslog:
