The change can be made permanent by creating a file
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/11-synaptics.conf with the following:
Section InputClass
Identifier touchpad twofinger
MatchProduct SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad
MatchIsTouchpad on
Driver synaptics
Option SHMConfig true
I should mention the solution above worked on my Acer 1410T, not a
Lenovo like the original bug report.
