The problem seems to be fixed in Ubuntu Karmic Alpha 2 using the live
cd.

This bug is NOT present in OpenSolaris 2009.06. Xorg.log is attached.
Maybe this helps. Can you provide us with a live CD for testing? I do
not wish to break my X configuration.
