I can confirm that hitting the "2" key at any time after initial system
boot will crash X. On my system, the Enter key will NOT crash X. So if I
change my password to anything that does not contain the number 2, X
will boot into the Gnome desktop. Ubuntu will work perfectly fine until,
whenever, wherever, you press the "2" key. At that point, you get the X
crash and are dumped back to the log-in screen. After the second log-in,
everything is fine.

I don't know what information is required about my system, so I will
give the basics: Dell Latitude D830 notebook, NVidia Quadro NVS
graphics, Core 2 Duo CPU, 4 GB RAM, Lucid x64 ("clean" install from
Alpha3 Live CD plus all patches/updates). NVidia proprietary drivers
(195). (Plymouth splash is not working for me)
