Can you post a step by step process of it please?
My home file server/media centre is useless without the desktop :-(

ok, I just fixed mine by removing the new Nvidia drivers.
sudo apt-get purge nvidia-*
Then I installed the older version of nvidia.
sudo apt-get install nvidia-304
Then I rebooted and I got desktop. :-)
