I would refrain from messing with the video drivers just to workaround a bug in the screen locker. Solution #27 doesn't work for me either. What works for me is killing light-locker and replacing it with xfce4-screensaver or gnome-screensaver. I haven't tested mate- screensaver and xscreensaver.

The correct solution to the problem I've been facing was finally solved on comment #58, thanks @prasanth-s-cmi. I've contacted the kernel developer responsible for these patches introduced around Linux 4.16.1 on https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1571330 , and he will blacklist my laptop m
