For Darktable, I'm pretty sure all you'll need to do is install the
nvidia-modprobe package after you activate the Nvidia drivers. It'll
then work without any further ado. Let me know if that does the trick
for you - it's been working for me over the past 3 Ubuntu releases,
across 3 PCs.

Thanks for all your comments! I will definitely take note of yours,
Richard, for the next time I reinstall Ubuntu (14.10), provided the
issue still occurs.
For 14.04, I fixed the problem with a symlink as described here:

*Correction: yours, Tom!

I can now say that, when the corruption occurs, as soon as I press

there is a console hiding behind the GUI. When I type anything, then
what I am actually typing is an input into the console.
So for instance, when these corruptions appear, and I type the letter

Nice to know about the fix! Best shapes changes the overall appearance
of fonts in Ubuntu a little, too, and they look somewhat better in
subpixel smoothing. Hope there'll be a fix soon for this bug!

the OOO corruption is gone (can't say about Lotus Notes).
Another way to fix it is to disable font antialiasing in OOO's View
