I have solved it now, but there is still a bug, as the transition to Precise did not work automatically. I had an old xorg.conf which defined only my old 1680x1050 Samsung monitor which died a year ago. Natty and Oneiric happily worked with my new Eizo with 1920x1080 and this file, Precise not.

After today's updates I am also suffering this bug, so I did the steps of comment #2. The overloading of the system happens VERY quickly. A top in a terminal window on a remote machine (SSHed in to my laptop) shows that Xorg is quickly using up all memory and taking between 60% and 100% CPU (see
