"low" seems to help but the fan still runs constantly (although not at a
high rate). Even at this setting it doesn't come close to what the
official ATI driver offered. Any other suggestions or workarounds?

Bryce, I understand that it is probably standard procedure to mark
something like this as "Wishlist" but it is honestly bad enough that I
cannot run my machine with it. This means that I am effectively stuck at
12.04 or earlier (as ATI no longer supports my card on the new version
of Xorg).

Whenever I use the open source radeon driver on my laptop the machine
heats up dramatically and as a result needs to run the fan non-stop.
This in turn causes the battery to drain quite quickly and makes the
machine almost unusable due to the heat it gives off.

In the past I have seen similar issues with this laptop when not turning
off the option to disable touchpad while typing, however with 12.04 this
