Same thing here in Kubuntu 12.04 Release with NX client and server from
NoMachine, version 3.5.0-7. This setup also shows the "NX connection
very, very slow" bug (I can see how the window borders are drawn).

I was now successful by adding the nomodeset option to my kernel options
in menu.lst. Everything is back in order with this option.

I have this issue with Karmic on an Asus laptop which has the i830
graphics chip. Unfortunately, Robert's suggestion (#60) didn't work for
me.
