I had that problem with Ubuntu 12.04 (Dell latitude e6330, amd64), and there were about 4 freezes per hour sometimes. For that reason I removed Ubuntu and installed Debian. There were no freezes with kernel 2.4, but I updated kernel to version 3.2.0-3-amd64 today and got complete freeze again. So it seems to me it isn't ubuntu problem, but it's linux kernel problem.
