I don't think attaching logs is necessary, as the cause of problem is
obvious: the Terminate_Server binding.

I have an xmodmap (generated with earlier Ubuntu) that had:
keycode 22 = BackSpace Terminate_Server BackSpace
On karmic, shitf+backspace kills X server. I practically never hit the
old ctrl+alt+backspace problem, but this kept tripping me up
I'm commenting to explain my solution for the posteriority:
- It seems that watching a video from tv-out in Windows (dual boot)
screwed up my monitor ( acer al2216w ). I started getting the bad edid
checksum errors from X.
- The problem appeared simultaneously on Ubuntu 9.04 and Debian Lenny
