I am experiencing the same with Mythbuntu 14.04 and an AMD A10 APU.
Deactivating the autorunning of xfsettingsd fixed the problem.

This is true. I see now that it also blinks just before the screen
saver activates.
My previous installations have never had this problem. Would changing
the xorg server affect/fix this? I have never done this, but I will
give it a shot. I'm afraid of rendering X inoperable.

Hello-
I have switched to the new kernel. It does not seem to have solved the
problem. I double checked with "System Monitor" under the "System" tab.
It now says "Kernel Linux 2.6.32-20-generic".

Binary package hint: xorg
On Ubuntu 10.04 the display blinks during startup, login, and when
starting Totem. Other video play-back and graphics programs do not
cause blinking. The display is a Sharp LC26D43U, resolution is
1360x768. This problem was not present in Ubuntu 9
