Apparently, this doesn't appear to be exclusive to Lucid now that I am
back on Karmic and I am still having a similar problem. The difference
is that I see a black desktop and then a couple of minutes later, my
desktop appears with icons at the same time.

pigimon, we are all waiting patiently for some fix to come along. For
now, it sounds like Tom is in the worst situation because of this bug.
