I've the same problem exactly I've Dell Optiplex tower PC with Nevidia GeForce FX 5200 graphics card when I installed Ubuntu 12.10 successfully everything working fine till log in screen then when I wrote my password and enter nothing appears only the mouse courser with black screen I pressed control with I don't remember f1 or f2 entered black screen with command I wrote some commands as ( sudo apt-get purge nevidia-current ) ( sudo apt-get purge fglrx ) ( sudo apt-get update ) ( sudo apt-get upgrade ) but after updating or upgrading then restarted my PC but nothing happened too any suggestions for the solution.
