I have the same problem using an integrated Intel GPU also... I am using gnome (choosing Ubuntu Classic in the login screen) and have set "Black Screen" as screensaver after 5min and "Put display to sleep when inactive for 10min". It doesn't happen every time, but when it does, I can only see the mouse cursor and nothing else. I restart the xserver pressing Atl-Tab-Backspace (have the right settings for zap).
