Christopher, I no longer have this laptop, however I was able to test it
with a friends' 5,2 machine on Live USB- the latest kernel in raring
works as does the trusty live cd with external vga.

Tested on Lucid Lynx 10.04. I think this problem is worse on laptop for
processors that has built-in Intel HD graphics (i3 and newer i5 and i7). For
example, mine is an Intel core i5 cpu (i5 520M 2.40GHz) and BIOS is defaulted
to the HD graphics and there are no BIOS options
