I started having this issue [both monitors black out, no mouse our keyboard input, still able to SSH in over the network] after upgrading from 11.04 to 12.04. Generally, when I SSH after the freeze/hang, Xorg is taking 100% CPU and I see EQ overflowing in the Xorg.0.log. My setup looks like

@Tye issue with the DVI/HDMI interface Are you referring to the physical connection? If so, I doubt that is it. Nothing about the physical port changed when I upgraded from 11.04 to 12.04. However, just like you, I did not see the problem on 11.04. I was definitely using the external
